Ionized Gas and the Energetics of the Central Molecular Zone
Presented by William Langer
Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Monday, March 16, 2015
12:00 noon in 169-336

Abstract
The Central Molecular Zone, the innermost molecular region of the Galaxy, is a place of enhanced physical conditions and energetics. I will discuss observations of [C II] and [N II] made with Herschel and SOFIA to study the properties of the ionized gas in the CMZ near Sgr E. These reveal evidence for a hot, thick, dense ionized layer surrounding the giant molecular clouds in this region and shed light on the energy sources and energetics of the CMZ.
