The talk will provide some background into the conception of Gaia, and discuss its main scientific goals. I will describe how Gaia works, and, in a little more detail, the role of the spectrometer in the payload. I will explain how the community was organized to bring the mission through to fruition for launch and commissioning at the end of 2013, then provide information on in-orbit performance. The talk will end with the planning for the data releases, and their accessibility to the international community.
